Directive Principles of State Policy (DPSP) are guidelines the government should follow while framing laws and policies. They are found in Part IV (Articles 36 to 51) and aim to build a welfare state and social & economic democracy. Unlike Fundamental Rights, they are NOT enforceable in court — but they are 'fundamental in the governance of the country'. India borrowed this idea from the Constitution of Ireland. This is a very common comparison question in exams.

राज्य की नीति के निदेशक तत्व (DPSP) वे दिशानिर्देश हैं जिनका पालन सरकार को कानून और नीतियाँ बनाते समय करना चाहिए। ये भाग IV (अनुच्छेद 36 से 51) में हैं और इनका उद्देश्य एक कल्याणकारी राज्य तथा सामाजिक व आर्थिक लोकतंत्र का निर्माण करना है। मौलिक अधिकारों के विपरीत, ये न्यायालय में लागू करने योग्य नहीं हैं — पर ये 'देश के शासन में मौलिक' हैं। भारत ने यह विचार आयरलैंड के संविधान से लिया है। परीक्षाओं में यह बहुत आम तुलनात्मक प्रश्न है।
